About Big Walnut Local School District

Big Walnut Local School District serves about 4,500 students across eight schools in eastern Delaware County, where Sunbury-area growth meets older village and township communities. Its grade organization is specific: preschool is housed at the Early Learning Center, children attend one of four elementary schools through grade three, and the first districtwide convergence occurs at Big Walnut Intermediate School in grades four and five. Students then continue together at Big Walnut Middle School for grades six through eight and Big Walnut High School for grades nine through twelve.

The buildings show how the district has adapted to enrollment change. The current high school opened during the 2021–22 school year, while a building that had previously served as the district’s high school, middle school, and intermediate school returned to student use as the Early Learning Center in 2026. Growth changes transportation and capacity planning. Once grade four begins, the ordinary school route is easy to identify.

All eight schools hold Purple Star designations and maintain contacts for military-connected families. That support has a building-level presence across the entire system, which matters when students arrive during the year because of a military move. Big Walnut combines an early childhood and K–3 network with three increasingly centralized grade-band schools.
